I did this in about 3 minutes, not counting writing on a piece of paper with a Sharpie ™ and scanning it in.
Back the day, it would take hours to do something like this with traditional tools - markers, airbrush, india ink, etc.

Unfortunately, the fullness promised is hampered (in some browsers) by the fact that many of my images from this time had transparent backgrounds. In newer versions of Firefox which put black backgrounds behind images when displayed alone, the result is less than satisfying.
